Did you know that during the current school year the students at Hoffman School participated in the creation of an amazing wood sculpture project? Artist in residence, Kevin Olis, visited Hoffman School for two weeks in November and December 2007, to oversee the production of this project. Under the direction and guidance of Mr. Olis and, art teacher, Eric Utech, the students created their self-portraits on sheets of plywood. During the first week of the project, the students received an art lesson in drawing facial features. After Mr. Olis drew each student’s silhouette on a plywood board, the students then proceeded to fill in their facial features. They were aided in this process by individual mirrors which were used to study individual features. During week two of the project, the artist instructed the Hoffman students on painting their self-portraits using acrylic paint. The students then enjoyed the process of mixing colors to capture their unique features and coloring. The result is the group of self-portraits representing the Hoffman School student body in the year 2007-08 which will be mounted onto the walls of the new school addition upon its completion. The project’s theme is that although our faces may appear different, inside we share many of the same emotions-hope, fear, happiness, and the need to belong. The creation of the project was the coordinated effort of many people, including Kevin Olis, Eric Utech and the Hoffman teaching staff, Principal Mark Walther, the Henking/Hoffman PTA, parent volunteers, and each and every member of the Hoffman School student body.
