Cultural Arts at Hoffman

Have you noticed some familiar faces staring at you as you walk through the hallway leading to the fifth grade classrooms?  Well, it’s not your imagination.  Our Wood Sculpture Project, created by the Hoffman School student body and staff in 2007-2008, has been mounted!  As you will recall, almost one year ago, Kevin Olis visited Hoffman School for two weeks and became our “Artist in Residence”, guiding the students in the creation of this amazing project. Creating the project was a two week process.  In week one, the students were instructed on drawing their features within their silhouettes, created by Mr. Olis.  Helpful tools, such as mirrors, were utilized by the students. The images were all drawn on large wooden planks, capturing 8-10 students per board. During the second week of the project, under the direction and guidance of art teacher, Eric Utech and Mr. Olis, the students received a mini lesson on painting their self-portraits using acrylic paint, and then enjoyed the process of mixing colors to capture their unique features and coloring.

The result is the group of self portraits representing the Hoffman School student body in the year 2007 which now lines the walls of the new school addition. The project’s theme is that although our faces may appear different, inside we share many of the same emotions-hope, fear, happiness, and the need to belong.

The creation of Hoffman School’s Wood Sculpture Project was the coordinated effort of many people, including Principal Mark Walther, the HE/HO PTA, Kevin Olis and Eric Utech.  It was Mr. Utech’s supervision, direction and full support of this project that allowed for its viability and successful completion.  Also, a great big thank you to each and every Hoffman student who gave this project the attention it deserved, to Hoffman staff and, of course, to all parent volunteers who donated their time during last year’s busy holiday season to ensure the project’s success.  When visiting Hoffman School, don’t forget to stop on by and take a look…you’ll be amazed!
