Cultural Arts at Henking
Mosaic Project - Jan/Feb 2009
|
We are finished with a school-wide mosaic mural project, funded by our PTA Cultural Arts program. Our children worked with an artist, Ms. Chris Zonta, and parent volunteers in art class to complete the mosaic. Ms. Zonta taught our students about public and community art, while our students were involved in every step of the mosaic process, completing an artwork that will last forever at Henking! Students also created a mini mosaic that they were able to take home. |

Empty Bowls is a hunger relief fundraising event in which art students created
handmade ceramic bowls (foodsafe!). After discussing world hunger, poverty, and peace,
students will discover that helping to feed hungry people can create peace.
Thank you to all who made the evening a huge success: diners and donors, soup makers and servers,
Boy Scouts & 8th graders, those setting up, cleaning up and all in between.
We raised over $3200 for the Northfield Township Food Pantry!

* Those soups were delicious, weren't they? The cookbook is now available to order!
* Also, make a trip over to You're Fired (Pfingsten & Willow) to decorate your own ceramic object
and 25% of your purchase will be donated to our PTA. Click HERE to download a coupon or stop in the school office. You MUST redeem the coupon for the PTA to gain the benefit.

| Hedgehog Visit |
On Thursday, January 29, 2009, Mr. Hoffman and his hedgehogs, Hedgie and Sonic,
made their annual visits to all of our kindergarten classrooms.
As a bonus this year, Ms. Kranz's ELS class was treated to a visit in the Learning Center.
These two little animals, African pygmy hedgehogs, are nocturnal insectivores.
They thrilled the children with their shy dispositions, except for Sonic, who kept jumping
off the display stand. They each weigh about one pound and are seven to eight inches long.
This visit was made possible by the Henking Hoffman PTA, through its Cultural Arts funds.

Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team
|
On June 6, 2008, the PTA sponsored its final Cultural Arts program of the year at Henking to cap off Spirit Day. At the end of the day, the students were treated to a 30 minute performance by Chicago Boyz Acrobatic Team. High flying tumbling fun was viewed on the grassy field behind the school. Mr. Stoga and several students helped out for the trampoline jumping as the field echoed with loud cheers.
|
Founded in 1999 by gymnast Tim Shaw, these young inner city youth are taught discipline, respect, hard work, integrity and teamwork. Members must maintain a "C" average in school, are not allowed to drop out of school, associate with gangs or use drugs. Through Tim's positive impact, many kids have changed their lives and Chicago Boyz have become regular performers at NBA events nationwide and are the halftime entertainment for the WNBA's Chicago Sky. We were very pleased to have them perform for our students.
